One of the (many) puzzling things when as a westerner you drive in India is the idea that people can stop anywhere at anytime just to have a chat with a friend or passerby. (My experience this causes quite a lot of congestion and accidents). In the west you would pull over and try to avoid causing any problems for the people behind, or those coming towards you. In India anything goes.
The cartoon below shows the western view of causing an obstruction, in this case by meeting an old friend, whether when walking, cycling, driving or by any other means of transportation. Note the unhappy faces of those people waiting to get past – that reflects the western view – you don’t do it, get out of the way. I think my friends here would be smiling whilst honking their horns loudly.
